چکیده

We report the detection, based on HST and Keck data, of two peculiar absorbers in the Lyα forest of the quasar PKS 0454+039. These clouds, at redshifts z = 0.6248 and 0.9315 respectively, display both Mg ii and Fe ii absorption lines in addition to the Lyα line. Based upon photoionization models, these are inferred to be photoionized by the intergalactic UV background, and to have H i column densities in the range 15.8 ≤ N (H i) ≤ 16.8. Furthermore, if one supposes that the relative abundances of heavy elements is similar to that of depleted clouds of our galaxy, the abundances of these two absorbers are greater than the solar value, which is a unique case for absorbers which are not associated to the quasar. We tentatively suggest that these absorbers may select giant low surface brightness galaxies.

We show that simple models of the chemical and spectrophotometric evolution of galaxies can be used to explore the properties of present-day galaxies and especially the causes of the observed variety among disc galaxies. We focus on the link between " classical " spirals and Low Surface Brightness galaxies.

Recent surveys suggest that most or all normal galaxies host a massive black hole with 1/100 to 1/1000 of the visible mass of the spheroid of the galaxy. Various lines of argument suggest that these galaxies have merged at least once in our past lightcone, and that the black holes have also merged. This leads to a merger rate of massive black holes of about 1/yrs.

I review current results from searching for galaxies giving rise to damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) at z < 1. Using 14 confirmed DLA galaxies, I further show that intermediate-redshift galaxies possess large H I envelope out to 24−30 h kpc radius. The photometric and spectral properties of these galaxies confirm that DLA galaxies are drawn from the typical field population, and not from a separate ...

Here we describe results of our attempt to determine what types of galaxies are responsible for the Lyα forest absorption systems, based on our ongoing imaging and spectroscopic survey of faint galaxies in fields of HST spectroscopic target QSOs. Our primary conclusions are that the bulk of the Lyα forest arises in more or less normal galaxies (that span the normal range of luminosity and morph...
